A 14-year-old Kentucky boy shot and killed two men attempting to steal firearms from a safe within a home early Sunday morning, police said.

Clay County 911 received a call at approximately 4:24 a.m. regarding a shooting incident in Manchester. Upon responding, Manchester Police found two individuals had been shot and requested assistance from Kentucky State Police, according to a news release from KSP.

Investigators found that the teen, who is a resident of the home, discovered the two men inside and saw them holding firearms, KSP said.

"The juvenile, acting in self-defense, retrieved a handgun and shot both men before escaping through a bedroom window," according to KSP.

8/30/18 WLS:

WINTER HAVEN, Florida -- After a heated text message exchange with his on-again, off-again girlfriend, Jason Boek followed an Uber he thought was giving her a ride home. Driving along a dark stretch of two-lane road in central Florida, Boek swerved his pickup truck early Tuesday morning in front of the rideshare car. Uber driver Robert Westlake slammed on his brakes.

They narrowly avoided a crash and stopped in the middle of the roadway. Then, Boek jumped out of his truck and quickly walked toward Westlake's Hyundai Elantra.

"You know I got a pistol?" Boek said, holding an object in the air. "You want me to f****** shoot you?"

Bang. With one shot, the Uber driver killed him.

The fatal confrontation, captured on Westlake's dash camera, was what the Polk County sheriff called a "classic 'stand your ground' case," referring to the controversial Florida law that grants immunity to people acting in self-defense.

"This is a justifiable homicide all day long. You have the right protect yourself," Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday. "This was the intent of the law."

Middletown police were called to the 1300 block of Woodlawn Avenue on a report of a burglary early Friday morning.

Kaylie Stacy found Michael Robert McClain, 39, "with his pants down, holding his penis with his right hand and had a hatchet, deadly weapon, in his left hand," the police report states.

"I came in, and my bedroom light was on, which is never left on we always turn it off," she said.
Stacy asked her husband Tim to help get McClain out of the residence. He was armed with a gun when he tried to wake up McClain, police said.

Yes, if you find a man without pants and a weapon in one hand, a handgun is recommended.  From the mugshot and news report, a shave and shower (and an antipsychotic medicine) are in order.

Jacksonville, FL

6/12/18 WSVN:

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WSVN) — Police say a man who tried to carjack two people was thwarted after the victims both pulled out guns to protect themselves.

According to Fox 30, Jacksonville police officers arrested 36-year-old Christopher Raymond Hill, charging him with strong-arm robbery, carjacking with firearm or deadly weapon, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and trespassing.

Detectives said the incident began when Hill robbed a Walmart liquor store, and attempted to flee in a silver Ford SUV. However, witnesses said the vehicle would not start, so he first tried to carjack Scott Reardean at knifepoint, cutting him on his arms and legs.

“I reached in between my glove box and my console, between my seats, reached down and got my weapon and brandished it for him,” Reardean told WJXT. “He was like, ‘Don’t shoot me.’ I was like, ‘Then get out of here.’”

Hill then jumped into the passenger seat of a woman’s car in a Starbucks drive-thru. Police said the woman got out of her car and grabbed a pistol from her trunk, pointing it at Hill until he ran off.

Jacksonville, FL

4/17/18 Jacksonville Channel 4:

GLEN ST. MARY, Fla - Three men say they were asleep inside a mobile home in Glen St. Mary about 4 a.m. Sunday when they heard a voice outside yell “Sheriff’s Office!” before the front door burst open. 

In stormed a masked gunman who fired off a single round before two of the men inside, one armed with an AR-15 rifle and the other with a handgun, emerged from two bedrooms and opened fire.

Gunfire ripped into the masked gunman and two other intruders, who crumpled to the floor with multiple gunshot wounds.

Those details surfaced Tuesday when the Baker County Sheriff’s Office released an arrest report linked to this weekend’s home invasion turned deadly triple shooting.

Columbus, GA

02/06/17 Columbus [GA] Ledger-Enquirer:

The Fort Benning soldier killed in a Sunday morning shooting on Armour Avenue had broken into an apartment and was shot by the resident living there, according to a police report on the incident.

Christopher Warden, 31, a Fort Benning soldier apparently thought the apartment was where his wife had gone to pick up her daughter. An unidentified friend of Warden’s and a neighbor in the apartments tried to tell Warden he was at the wrong address. But Warden beat and kicked the door, then broke out a window and climbed through.

Once he was inside the apartment, the resident there heard him, armed herself and yelled at Warden to leave. He refused and walked into her bedroom where she fired a handgun once into his chest.

Ada, Oklahoma

6/3/17 News 9 Oklahoma:

Ada Police say a man shot and killed his neighbor, claiming the neighbor was trying to drown two infants Friday morning.

Police officer Lisa Bratcher says the man was attempting to drown a boy and a girl, both three-months-old in the bathtub when a 12-year-old ran out of the home and told his neighbor.

According to KXII, the CBS affiliate in Sherman, Texas, police said that neighbor went inside the home, confronted the man holding the two infants in the tub and shot him twice.

Police say the two infants were stable when they were taken to an Oklahoma City hospital.

Sorry, sir, they are 3 months and one day too old for that to be legal.

Boise County, ID

5/29/17 KIVI:

According to Idaho Fish and Game, Marvin Jennings of Boise and his uncle from Lynwood, WA were hunting near Clear Creek Sunday evening when they encountered a Black Bear.

The pair was hunting over a bait area when the uncle shot and wounded the bear. When Jennings approached, the bear knocked him down and bit him multiple times on the left arm and leg. Jennings then shot and killed the bear with a handgun.

Jennings is in serious condition at St. Alphonsus according to hospital spokesperson. 

Aventura, FL

12/19/16 Miami Herald:

Just before 6 a.m. Sunday, an Uber driver with a passenger on his way to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport was cut off by a Dodge Caravan on the William Lehman Causeway while heading to the mainland. The causeway links Sunny Isles Beach to Aventura.

Aventura police, who released more information on Monday, said Kevin DeVincent Johnson, 24, got out of the van with a gun in each hand and confronted Namique Anderson while he was driving for Uber.

Still in his vehicle, according to police, Anderson fired four times, striking and killing Johnson, who never got off a shot. Anderson was not charged with a crime. Though Uber has a policy against drivers carrying weapons, the company said it was looking into the incident.

“He was acting in self defense,” Aventura police spokesman Chris Goranitis said.
Police don’t think Anderson or his passenger were targeted. They called it a random act. State records show Johnson was arrested in 2015 by the Broward Sheriff’s Office for possession of marijuana and battery on a police officer. He pleaded no contest.

They believe Johnson and another man who was in the van — and whom they have in custody — had committed an armed robbery in Broward County about an hour earlier. The man, whom they haven’t named, fled in the van when Johnson was shot, but police found the van an hour later after receiving a tip.

BOYNTON BEACH (CBS12) — A Boynton Beach grandmother was home alone when three burglars entered her house.
But what she did next may surprise you.
"It was really scary. It was a very, very scary situation. 'Cause I had no idea what they were gonna do," said the woman, whom we agreed not to identify.
About 12:45 Tuesday afternoon she went to the peephole and saw a man was at her front door, banging on the door, ringing the bell.
He left but came back a few minutes later, with a T-shirt over his head, and putting on gloves, so she ran to the bedroom to get a handgun from the dresser beside her bed.
"I heard something, glass breaking and then I was freaking out," she recalled.
Three menthree burglars---- were in her living room, and she was in the bedroom standing just inside the doorway ready to shoot them if they entered.
"I decided that it's either them or me, you know. I had to save my life. One of them came to the door here and opened it and when he did I had the gun in his face," she said.

Redondo Beach, CA

It was about 2:30 a.m. last Tuesday, Jan. 19, when police responded to a shooting on an otherwise calm street in North Redondo Beach. 
 
The incident, neighbors said, was surprisingly quiet — most residents of Nelson Avenue’s 2000 block had little idea of the circumstances that brought the flashing lights of Redondo Beach Police to their street, while a few were shocked to learn that a shooting had occurred at all.

Despite the confusion, the facts remain: A 33-year-old Redondo Beach resident, later identified by police as Laurencio Gamboa, was arrested and charged with burglary after being shot by the resident of a home on Nelson Avenue.

According to police reports, a resident at the apartment complex was alerted to movement in his garage by a wireless security system. Via their phone, the resident was able to watch the suspected burglar standing near a motorcycle (belonging to a friend of the resident).

The resident and a friend in the residence armed themselves with firearms — one with a handgun, one with a rifle. The two found the suspect pushing the motorcycle down the complex’s driveway and ordered the suspect to drop the bike.

He did, began to run away, then according to reports, turned back toward the pair and confronted them. That’s when the resident shot the suspect in the leg. The suspect then ran down the street before being tackled and subdued by the resident. Police arrived on the scene shortly thereafter....

Under the law, according to California Penal Code section 198.5, a person using deadly force is allowed to do so, if reasonably fearing for their life or the life of someone in their home, against someone who has “unlawfully and forcefully” entered their home.

The state’s criminal jury instructions regarding justifiable homicide go a bit further. Language in CalCrim 505 indicates that a jury may be told by a judge that a defendant “is not required to retreat,” and is entitled to “if reasonably necessary, pursue an assailant until the danger” has passed — even if they may have gotten to safety by retreating.

When an ax-wielding burglar tried to break into Joseph Milspaugh's home on Sunday morning, the 92-year-old World War II veteran didn't hesitate to defend himself.

When Milspaugh, of San Jacinto, heard the suspect trying to break into his home in the 1400 block of Chase Street, he armed himself with his model 1911 .45 caliber handgun.

s the suspect smashed the door with his ax and tried to crawl into the house, Milspaugh wasted no time and fired off one round from his handgun at the suspect.

"It's stupid what he did," Milspaugh said. "Being a Sunday, he assumed that people would be going shopping or going to church and no one would be home, that it would be a good time to break in."

Never bring an axe to a gunfight.

Elko, NV: Careful Who You Room With

ELKO — Initial investigation reveals that a man might have killed another man in self-defense during a fight early Sunday morning.

Elko police are investigating the homicide of Clinton Hopper, 32, who was killed Sunday morning in his girlfriend’s apartment by Frank Criswell.

Criswell, 28, and the apartment renter, Alesha Piccinini, 29, had gone on a date the evening before, Elko Police Lt. Rich Genseal said. The two had met a few weeks ago. They returned to Piccinini’s apartment at about 3 a.m. Sunday.

At about 6:40 a.m., Hopper entered the apartment. He was in a relationship with Piccinini and had a key to the apartment, Detective Dennis Price said.

Then Criswell got up to see who had entered the apartment, Hopper allegedly hit him in the head with a blunt object, which police believe was a skateboard. The two men then began fighting and punching each other, Genseal said.

At some point, Criswell grabbed a .45-caliber pistol that belonged to him and shot Hopper once through the neck. Genseal said at the time, Hopper — a 6-foot, 5-inch tall man who weighed 235 pounds — was on top of the 5-foot, 8-inch tall, 165-pound Criswell and choking him. Criswell claimed he was beginning to black out.

ELKO — Further investigation supports the finding that the shooting death of a California man on May 3 was justifiable homicide, according to police.

Elko Police Lt. Rich Genseal said investigators are not going to pursue charges against Frank Criswell, who reportedly shot and killed Clinton Hopper during a fight in Alesha Piccinini’s apartment.
