When officials arrived on the scene, they learned that the now-deceased man had broken into the home and was seen by the homeowner entering his daughter's room. Police said the father confronted the man and wrestled to get the man's gun away from him. 

The father was able to get the man's gun and shoot him, officials said. After the man was shot, he went downstairs and began stabbing himself, police said.

He was later pronounced dead at an area hospital. An autopsy will reveal which instance ultimately caused the man's death. 

Chicago, IL

A clerk wrestled a gun away from two men who tried to rob his Austin neighborhood store and then shot them Tuesday afternoon on the West Side, according to Chicago Police.

The botched robbery happened about 4:45 p.m. inside the small business in the 5800 block of West Chicago, police said.

One of the alleged robbers, 34, was shot in the torso and taken to Loyola University Medical Center. The other, 35, was shot in the upper leg and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said.

Culpeper County, VA

If you have a gun, a criminal might take it from you.  NBC Washington, DC:

A man has been shot and killed with the gun police say he used to force his way into a house in Culpeper County, Virginia.

Culpeper County sheriff's investigators said 21-year-old Delonte Jones, of Prince George's County, and 18-year-old Amber Eley, of Orange, Virginia, knocked on the door of a home in the 1400 block of Woodland Church Road.

When the homeowner answered the door, Jones and Eley asked for help with their car. The resident refused and as he tried to shut the door, police said Jones forced himself into the house and struck the man with a gun.

After a struggle, the homeowner took control of the weapon and fired at Jones, hitting him in the stomach. Neighbors told News4 they heard multiple gunshots.

Charleston, WV: Serial Killer Chose Poorly

CHARLESTON, W. VA (KPTV) - Police in Charleston, West Virginia are investigating whether an Oregon man killed after he attacked a woman is connected to some violent, unsolved murders.

Police said Neal Falls, 45, from Springfield, met up with a woman in West Virginia using the website Backpage.com, which offers escort services.

When he met up with the woman, police said he tried to strangle the woman, but she fought back. The woman told police that she grabbed Falls' gun after he put the weapon down and shot him once, killing him.
Police said investigators found a cache of weapons in his trunk. Falls had several axes, a shovel, bleach, knives, a machete and other items in his vehicle. Falls also had handcuffs and a pistol in his pocket.
The shooting was self-defense, according to police.

While the shooting happened in West Virginia, police in Ohio are keeping an eye on the case.

They aren't officially connecting the cases, but they are looking to see if Falls may be connected to the mysterious deaths and disappearances of six women. Some have been linked to prostitution.

Adamsville, AL: Bringing a Gun to a Rape Is Bad Idea For Rapist

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —Authorities have determined that a woman who shot and killed her accused abductor and rapist acted in self-defense.

The incident was reported at 6 p.m. Nov. 3  in the 2800 block of Pebble Creek Parkway in Forestdale. Adamsville police were asked to help located a 26-year-old woman who had been reported abducted earlier in the day.

The woman was found in the parking lot. Jeremy Arnold Ford, 25, was found dead in an apartment. He had suffered an apparent gunshot wound.

Investigators said the woman had been abducted at gunpoint, raped, driven to locations the suspect wanted to visit, then forced to drive back to Ford's apartment, where she was once again sexually assaulted. They say the victim shot Ford with his own gun.

Guns Do Get Taken Away And Used Against Them

WASHINGTON - A weekend triple shooting in Northeast D.C. appears to be a case of self-defense from a robbery.

Four people were walking in the 700 block of H Street around 1 a.m. Saturday when a man identified as Jerome Wright held them up at gunpoint. But according to a source close to the investigation, one of the victims fought back.

In the struggle, two of the robbery victims were shot. One of them, after being hit in the chest, managed to wrestle the gun from Wright and fatally shot him.

Police did not identify the robbery victims, but said they are expected to survive.

“It’s a justifiable homicide, but the issue is it could have been very tragic the other way,” said Sgt. Delroy Burton of the D.C. Police Union.

FOX 5 has learned that Wright was a career criminal. He just spent five years in jail on felony robbery and other charges. He got out of a halfway house in June. By September, he was back out selling drugs on H Street.

Gun Taken Away And Used Against the Criminal

A gunshot victim showed up at a Napa hospital emergency room Wednesday and became a suspect in the kidnapping and attempted murder of a San Francisco man who told police he escaped his bindings and wrestled his kidnapper for the gun, Napa County law enforcement officials said Friday....

About seven hours later, Napa police received a phone call from a San Francisco police officer who said a man had contacted the department and reported he’d been kidnapped, taken to Napa, bound and held for 24 hours. He said he’d escaped after a struggle with one of his kidnappers and that during the struggle, the kidnapper had tried to shoot him, but that he’d gotten the gun and shot the kidnapper in self defense, according to Pike and Napa police Lt. Debbie Peecook, who also released information about the case.

A store manager wrestled a loaded rifle from an unsuccessful thief Friday morning, then managed to get his license plate number after the robber tried to flee but got stuck in traffic.

Rodolfo Evaristo, 40, said all he could feel was fear as he stared down the barrel of a rifle at his store, Lopez Market, on 200 West El Norte Parkway. The robber had come in the front, but seeing no one there, had walked to the back of the store and demanded Evaristo give him cash. Evaristo put up his hands and begged the masked gunman not to shoot. Evaristo's brother, Simon Evaristo, 50, also witnessed the incident.

Without getting any money, the robber then tried to flee out the back door. He took one hand off the gun to try to push open the fire door, not realizing it was deadbolted below. With the gun down, and confident that his brother would back him up, Rodolfo Evaristo decided to make his move. He grabbed the rifle with both hands and managed to wrestle it away from the would-be robber while screaming for someone to call the police. The thief then unlocked the door and ran to a Jetta parked behind the store.

Evaristo was able to write down the car's license plate number, he said, because it got stuck in traffic on Escondido Boulevard.

An hour later, police found an abandoned Jetta with matching plates on the south side of town. Police eventually arrested Jose Zardon, 47, of Escondido and booked him on suspicion of armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is also investigating Zardon's immigration status.

Home Invasion Victims Fight Back

Lake Worth, Florida

LAKE WORTH - No one was injured when a shotgun was fired during a home-invasion robbery in which the victims fought back and managed to wrest away one of the guns early today, according to the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office.

The home invasion and scuffle involved three robbers and seven unidentified residents in a home west of Lake Worth.

Three of the residents had just arrived home from a nightclub in the 1400 block of Hillcrest Drive shortly after 2 a.m. when three suspects emerged from the back yard. One of the men was brandishing a shotgun and the other a silver handgun.

The suspects pistol whipped one of the victims and forced him to stay down, the Sheriff's Office said. But that victim was able to get away.

The suspects then barged into the home, where another four people slept, and confronted another one of the club-goers for money. When he declared he had none, they instead took his cell phone, watch and 32-inch gold necklace, Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Teri Barbera said.

The suspects then woke up one of the sleeping residents who fought for control of the shotgun. It fired, lodging pellets into a bedroom wall, Barbera said.

Meanwhile, as the two other suspects went around the house screaming "where is the money at?", one of the victims was able to grab the handgun. Also, another victim managed to get an 8-inch knife and began chasing the suspects.

That victim may have cut one of the suspects, Barbera said. At that point, the suspects left the house and headed south on Hillcrest Drive possibly in a four-door, blue, older model Toyota or Honda.

The suspects' faces were partially covered with black bandanas. The investigation continues.

Victim Takes Rapists Rifle Away, Beats Him To A Pulp

Police had been watching Vincent Goff for years, convinced he was the masked man who sexually assaulted couples at gunpoint on the Mississippi coast. But before investigators closed in, they say Goff picked the wrong victim and was beaten nearly to death with his own rifle.

Goff, a 37-year-old unemployed Biloxi man with a wife and two stepsons, was being held Wednesday in the Harrison County Jail after spending five days in a hospital recovering from severe head wounds. Little is known about Goff's background or the unidentified man who beat him so hard that the wood stock of the rifle broke. But authorities say Goff's arrest caps a terrorizing series of attacks that began on the sandy banks of the Biloxi River in 2006.

Goff allegedly approached a man and woman last Thursday afternoon on an isolated logging road in Harrison County and forced them into the woods with a rifle, Sheriff's Maj. Ron Pullen said Wednesday. They were forced to strip off their clothes and told to perform sexual acts when the male victim, described as a physically fit member of the military in his mid-30s, wrestled the gun away.

"He beat him until the stock broke over his head and then continued to beat him until he thought he had him incapacitated," Pullen said.

Authorities said a homeowner shot and killed a teenager trying to rob him Friday morning. Turns out, that teenager lived right next door.

Lancaster County sheriff's deputies said 18-year-old Jarkevious Ingram walked out of the woods on Culp Street late Thursday night with two other men. One was wearing a ski mask and two of them, including Ingram, had guns, deputies said.

Detectives said they approached 34-year-old Ed Patterson Jr. who was just getting home. According to deputies, the three men demanded Patterson's wallet and his keys.

Patterson struggled for the gun and was shot twice, once in the stomach and once in the groin. He managed to wrestle the gun away and shoot Ingram, deputies said.

Ingram walked more than 100 yards down Culp Street and collapsed on Fahbian McCullough's front porch.

"I looked out and he was lying on the porch, and there was blood everywhere," McCullough said.

He said Ingram was his friend and was at his house nearly every day. He had heard gunshots, but didn't know what was going on until he opened the door and found Ingram.

"I asked him what happened, and he said, ‘Be quiet.' He wouldn't tell me," McCullough said.

Patterson was able to drive himself to Springs Memorial Hospital, and he was later flown to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Deputies said his injuries were not life- threatening.

Mikesheia Wade is Ingram's cousin. She was at his side at the hospital when he died.

"I was there with him the whole time. I was holding his hand. He wasn't doing too well," Wade said. "I don't think he did this. The truth is going to be different than what people think.”

Lancaster County sheriff's deputies said they don't yet know why it appears Ingram tried to rob his own neighbor. Cousins said the two families have lived next door to each other for more than a year.

Major David Belk said detectives are still investigating, and it's not known if Patterson will face charges.

Deputies said they did recover the gun, a .38-caliber revolver that Patterson left in his sport utility vehicle when he drove to the hospital.

Robbery fails when cab driver grabs gun, bites suspect

A cab driver fought back against a man, who tried to rob him at gunpoint on Friday morning, by biting his ear and taking his gun.

Detective David Ramer with the Chandler Police Department said a cab driver pulled into an apartment complex near Dobson and Ocotillo roads around 1 a.m. to drop off his passenger.

As the cab came to a stop, the passenger allegedly pulled a gun on the driver and demanded cash.

Ramer said the cab driver grabbed the suspect's gun and pulled it down between the front seats, forcing the suspect to lean over the seats closer to the cab driver.

With his hands holding the gun down between the seats, the cab driver reportedly bit the suspect's ear.

"I almost bit his ear off," said the cab driver, Mwengi Gachii. "I'm okay because I am always suspicious of people like that.”

The suspect then fired one shot, striking the driver seat of the vehicle and then responded in turn by biting Gachii, according to the police report.

At one point, Gachii says the suspect bit him in the chest. "He was really drunk," Gachii said.

After a struggle, the suspect fled from the cab. Gachii ran after the suspect while carrying his gun.

After a brief chase, Gachii stopped and called police.

Police were able to catch the alleged robber in the complex.

The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Matthew Mailhot of Chandler, was taken to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Mailhot was booked into the Maricopa County Jail for armed robbery.

A shooting Friday morning in the 1500 block of Clark Road resulted from a struggle by a man who brought a gun with him and was shot with it during the fight, Cpl. Gabrielle King said.

Ronnerial Luckett, 46, was shot in the forehead as he and Donnell Currin Jr. both fought to control Luckett's handgun. The weapon discharged during the confrontation and Luckett was wounded.

Luckett was in serious condition after the shooting and an updated condition was not available Monday.

Detective Cpl. Michael Barnes is investigating the shooting, which police believe will be ruled as self defense, King said.

Kentucky: Lexington doctor killed in shooting

Lexington doctor killed in shooting

Police are investigating a deadly shooting over the weekend, involving a well known doctor in Lexington.

27NEWSFIRST has learned Rodney Mann was shot and killed Sunday outside a home on Four Mile Road in Clark County. We're learning more information into what may have brought Dr. Mann to that home in Clark County.

The doctor, himself, recently contacted 27NEWSFIRST about an issue that sources now say may have led to the shooting.

About a month ago, Dr. Mann contacted NEWSFIRST about an incident he had in the parking lot of Sam's Club in which he says a man keyed his car after an altercation. The damage was said to have cost Dr. Mann $1,100 worth of damage to his Acura.

Police say Dr. Mann then went to the man's home in Clark County and began to slash the tires to his car. The homeowner caught Mann slashing the tires on his truck and came out to confront him.

Police say Mann had two guns and a knife on him and say during the fight the owner was able to get one gun away from him and shoot him.

At Mann's doctor office, Thoroughbred Allergy and Asthma off Richmond Road, a note says all appointments on Monday have been canceled.

The doctor has been featured in a number of stories here on 27NEWSFIRST and was just a guest on our afternoon show three weeks ago.

Police have not charged the man who pulled the trigger. They're investigating if the shooting was in self defense.

Mann grew up in Corbin and graduated from UK and the University of Louisville Medical School.

Dr. Mann served patients at both of his offices in Lexington and in Corbin.

California: Mira Loma man kills home-invasion suspect

Mira Loma man kills home-invasion suspect

On Sunday at 8:11 a.m., deputies from the Jurupa Valley Station responded to a report of shots fired in the 31000 Block of Chardonnay Way in the community of Mira Loma. Deputies found a deceased male adult in the street.

Investigators from the Jurupa Valley Station and the Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit responded to the location and assumed the investigation.

Investigators learned the victim of the homicide and a female companion had participated in a home invasion robbery. During the robbery, a struggle ensued between the suspects and the homeowners. The male suspect dropped his firearm during the struggle with the homeowner. The homeowner retrieved the firearm and fatally shot the suspect during the struggle for the weapon. The suspect attempted to flee the residence after he was shot, but collapsed in front of the residence.

The identity of the deceased male is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Update: The female suspect in the home invasion robbery was located by the Ontario Police Department in the area of Walnut and Cucamonga on Sunday at 7:15 p.m. The suspect was identified as Amy Schinzel (pictured), 30 years of age, from Ontario. She was arrested and booked for murder.

Gunman Shot to Death During Home Invasion

A home invasion turns deadly after one of the robbers is shot by the homeowner.

It happened on Moss Landing Drive in Antioch around 1:00 a.m.

Dennis Nicholson told detectives that he was confronted by 22 year old Elijah Minnard (pictured left) at the home.

Nicholson says Minnard had a shotgun, and 17 year old Jeremie Thomas (pictured right), had a pistol.

Police say the men forced Nicholson inside, and Minnard held Nicholson and 25 year old Lincoya Stephens at gunpoint upstairs while Thomas searched the downstairs area of the home.

Police say Stephens grabbed the shotgun to try and disarm Minnard, but Stephens was hit in the leg by a shotgun blast.

Police say Stephens and Nicholson still managed to get the gun away from Minnard.

Officers say Stephens then pulled a pistol that was concealed in his waistband and shot and killed Minnard.

Thomas, hearing the gunfire, went to check on Minnard.

Stephens opened fire on Thomas, and he fled the house.

At 2:15 a.m., police say Thomas, with gun in hand, jumped in front of a driver on Hamilton Church Road and yelled for her to stop.

The driver accelerated as she and her four passengers ducked.

Thomas was caught by officers a short time later.

Detectives say Thomas told them he and Minnard went to the home to commit a drug-related robbery.

No drugs were found in the residence.

Stephens is hospitalized with a gunshot wound to his leg and has not yet been interviewed by detectives.

The investigation is continuing.

Thomas is charged at Juvenile Court with two counts of aggravated robbery, two counts of unlawful weapon possession, attempted criminal homicide, four counts of aggravated assault, and attempted aggravated robbery.

Thomas is being held in juvenile detention pending a hearing.

Homeowner shoots would-be intruder

A homeowner confronted a pistol-wielding, bandana-wearing man at his front door, wrestled the weapon away and shot the would-be intruder late Saturday, deputies said.

The Manatee County Sheriff's Office said Christopher Mullins, 23, answered the door at his Bradenton home about 11 p.m. Saturday and found Tron Calloway, 26, on the doorstep.

The two struggled over Calloway's gun and Calloway fired several shots, wounding Mullins, the sheriff's office said. Mullins got control of the weapon and shot Calloway.

Mullins was treated and released from Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petesrburg, the sheriff's office said.

Calloway was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he is listed in critical but stable condition.

No charges have been filed and the investigation is continuing.

A 16-year-old was shot and wounded with his own gun Thursday morning during an attempted robbery on Detroit's west side, police said.

Two teenagers, one carrying a rifle and the other a handgun, approached a man at the BPS Gas Station on Plymouth Road and the northbound Southfield Service Drive around 6:40 a.m.

The robbery victim grabbed a gun out of the teen's hand and shot him with it.

The wounded teen jumped into a vehicle and attempted to drive away, but crashed into several cars on Forrer Street.

He was transported to Sinai Grace Hospital and is in stable condition.

The other robber fled the area. There are unconfirmed police reports that the second robbery suspect was arrested in downtown Detroit.

Suspect in home invasion robbery shot during struggle

A 21-year-old Evansville man was shot in the hand this afternoon as he wrestled with a man he was trying to rob, authorities said.

Bassil Mohammad Kamali was booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail after being checked out at Deaconess Hospital for a minor wound.

He is being held without bond pending an initial court appearance Monday. Preliminary charges are listed as robbery with a firearm, armed burglary, intimidation with a weapon and criminal recklessness, all felonies.

Evansville Police Department Sgt. Greg Motz said Kamali was armed with a handgun when he knocked on the victim's door in the 900 block of Douglas Drive. It happened shortly before 2 p.m.

Motz said Kamali, who also lives in the area, heard that the victim had just sold a stereo and believed he had cash on him.

The victim was asleep and his two children - ages 6 and 8 - answered the door. The children started screaming when the armed suspect barged in, Motz said.

"(Then the victim) comes out and wrestles with the guy with the gun and pushes him out," Motz said. "At some point, the gun goes off and shoots the suspect in the hand."

A man nearby heard the children screaming for help during the struggle, Motz said. He then stopped Kamali from fleeing and physically held him on scene until authorities arrived.

"The guy jumped over the privacy fence when he heard the kids screaming," Motz said. "It was a heroic act."

Home Invader Shot With Own Gun In Anchorage

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Two people were shot Monday during an Anchorage home invasion and police said one of the robbery suspects may also have been wounded.

The homeowner, Tupo Santini, ran outside for help during the robbery. He managed to wrestle a gun away from one of the assailants and fire at him before all three fled, police said.

One man who may have been involved showed up at a hospital with a gunshot wound to his stomach but the other two were at large Monday morning, said police spokesman Lt. Dave Parker.

"We do not know who they are yet," Parker said.

Just after midnight, three armed men wearing dark "hoodies" broke into a mobile home in south Anchorage, intending to rob the home, police said.

Santini was at home with his five children. Police said his girlfriend, Christina Dau, had left to go to a store but his brother, Lofia Santini, and his girlfriend, Amy Itta, were visiting.

The men demanded money and one struck Tupo Santini on the head with a pistol. Santini suffered a cut to his head and the gun fired.

Lofia Santini began struggling with a suspect and Itta tried to crawl down a hallway.

Lofia Santini was shot twice in the chest and Itta was shot in the back. Police said their injuries were serious.

No children were injured.

Tupo Santini ran to get help and was chased outside by a gunman. Santini managed to wrestle the gun from the assailant and fire at him. The assailants then left.
