Chicago, IL

1/13/16 WLS channel 7:
Two robbery suspects were shot by an employee at a cell phone store in the Jeffrey Manor neighborhood on Chicago's South Side.

The T-Mobile store in the 2000-block of East 95th St. was left riddled with bullet holes. If not for the employee carrying a weapon with a concealed carry license, the manager of the store says he might be telling a different story.

"I think concealed carry is a great opportunity for managers, workers, employees to protect themselves in these cases. And our employee did a great job to protect themselves and the other employee," said Neil Tadros, store manager.

He says two men entered the store and acted like they were shopping for phones for a few minutes, then pulled out guns.

One employee ran to the back to call for help while the other pulled out his own gun and fired at the two suspects. He hit one of them in the groin and the arm, and the other in the abdomen and the arm.

Another Shooting in Chicago: Reason to Celebrate or Something

From Dec. 1, 2015 Chicago Tribune:
A concealed carry gun owner who shot a man who was firing at a group of people in April said Tuesday that Chicago police have returned his licensed firearm.

John Hendricks, 48, was taking a break between Uber fares in the 2900 block of North Milwaukee Avenue on April 17 when Everardo Custodio, 23, opened fire on a group near Hendricks' vehicle, according to his account and police records.

Hendricks fired his Springfield Armory .45, striking Custodio three times, according to police reports.

He was not charged with any crime in the shooting because he fired in self-defense, which is allowed under Illinois' concealed carry laws.

Custodio was charged in connection with the shooting and pleaded guilty to related charges in August, according to court records and representatives of the Cook County state's attorney's office.

Hendricks said police took custody of his firearm that night, after he called 911 following the shooting, and that repeated phone calls regarding the status of his gun had gone nowhere until recently.

More details in this article interviewing Hendricks.

Never Bring A Fake Gun To A Real Gunfight

From Nov. 2, 2015 Washington Post:
On Saturday evening, a man wearing a mask walked into a South Side Chicago bodega, pulled out a gun and announced a robbery.

As the robber pointed his gun at the store’s employees, however, a customer pulled out his own gun.
The robber’s gun, it turns out, was fake.

The customer’s was not.

Now the robbery suspect is dead, gunned down by the concealed-weapon-toting customer.

The case is the latest in a string of incidents across the country in which bystanders have pulled out their concealed weapons and used them against suspected criminals.
At least this fool wasn't a suspected criminal.  As one comment observed:
And an object lesson here...play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Hartshorn says the men let the homeowner go when his wife said she had expensive jewelry upstairs. While the men focused on a jewelry box, the homeowner grabbed a handgun and shot them.

Hartshorn says another 17-year-old waited in a pickup outside. He drove away but was arrested a short time later.

Indianola is about 10 miles southwest of Danville.

Illinois: Police: Man shot by store owner

Waukegan, Illinois

From the Daily Herald of July 8, 2009
Police: Man shot by store owner

A Waukegan man is in stable condition after being shot by the store owner he is charged with robbing.

Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Patricia Fix said officials are reviewing the details of the Sunday night shooting of Demitrius Newbill, 29. Newbill, who was shot in the chest, is at Vista East Medical Center.

Fix said Newbill, of the 500 block of Poplar Street, entered the Pasteleria Panaderia, 701 Yeoman St., about 8:15 p.m. The owner of the bakery told police Newbill had his left hand under his shirt and asked for a piece of paper and a pencil, Fix said.

Newbill wrote a note that said: "I have a gun. Give me all the money," and handed it to the owner, Fix said.

The owner gave Newbill all the cash in the register, Fix said, and told police he believed he saw a gun in Newbill's waistband as he did so.

Newbill then took the business telephone and cell phones from the owner and his employees, Fix said, and began backing toward the door of the store.

The owner told police he thought he saw Newbill reaching for the object in his waistband as he neared the door, so he took a .38 caliber revolver from underneath the counter and fired three times.

Police interviewed Newbill at the hospital, Fix said, and he admitted the robbery and that he told the store owner he had a gun.

Newbill, who was unarmed, has been charged with aggravated robbery and faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

Fix said police reports and witness statements are being reviewed to determine if anyone else will be charged.

The store owner has a current state firearm owner's identification card, Fix said.

Court records show Newbill was convicted of robbery in 2003 and placed on probation, but he was found in violation of the probation and resentenced to five years in prison.

Illinois: Burglar Shot During Home Invasion

Hardin County, Illinois

From WSIL of June 10, 2009
Burglar Shot During Home Invasion

A home invasion late Tuesday night ended with an alleged burglar in the hospital, according to Hardin County Sheriff Tom Seiner.

The sheriff reported in a press release that the woman in the home shot the intruder.

The home on Tower Rock Road outside Elizabethtown belongs to Marty Impastato and her husband Bruce, who was not home.

Impastato's daughter tells News Three that the man entered the home through an unlocked window. Shawna Stevens says the man is a friend of the family who visits the home regularly. She says she's not sure why he broke in.

According to Stevens, Impastato grabbed her gun when she heard the man make his way across the house. Stevens reports that when the man entered the bedroom and rustled through the safe where the family keeps jewelry and prescription drugs, Impastato shot him.

Illinois statute makes it legal for the victim of a home invasion to shoot someone in their home if they believe they can prevent violence to themselves or others in the dwelling or they reasonably believe that force is necessary to prevent a felony.

The sheriff's department is not releasing the name of the alleged burglar. He is described only as a white male in his twenties. Wednesday night he was in the intensive care unit at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Indiana. He has not been charged.
