Coshocton County, OH

A customer with a gun stopped a man with a knife at an Ohio McDonald’s over the weekend, police say.
A 22-year-old man made threats inside an area McDonald’s on Saturday with a knife in hand, Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a Facebook post.
When a customer eating inside the restaurant noticed the man had a knife, he confronted him, ultimately drawing a gun he had on his person, police say. The customer had a concealed carry permit.

Middletown, OH

Because so many U.S. mass murders involve axes or hatchets, this news story caused great wonder.  7/6/18 Fox News Channel 19:
Middletown police were called to the 1300 block of Woodlawn Avenue on a report of a burglary early Friday morning.

Kaylie Stacy found Michael Robert McClain, 39, "with his pants down, holding his penis with his right hand and had a hatchet, deadly weapon, in his left hand," the police report states.

"I came in, and my bedroom light was on, which is never left on we always turn it off," she said.
Stacy asked her husband Tim to help get McClain out of the residence. He was armed with a gun when he tried to wake up McClain, police said.
Yes, if you find a man without pants and a weapon in one hand, a handgun is recommended.  From the mugshot and news report, a shave and shower (and an antipsychotic medicine) are in order.

Cleveland, OH

 9/7/17 CBS Pittsburgh:
CLEVELAND (AP) – Police say three employees of a Cleveland Taco Bell opened fire on two armed robbers, killing one.
Police have said two masked robbers entered the restaurant early Wednesday and ordered three employees to lie on the floor. Police say three other employees pulled out handguns and opened fire, shooting one of the suspects six times. The other suspect ran off.
So far, no threats from Taco Bell to punish the good guys.  Maybe the SJWs haven't taken over.

Dayton, OH

3/31/17 Dayton Daily News:
Dayton police said Martin’s shooting of two men — one who died — in a car outside the Roosters Restaurant on North Main Street isn’t classified as justifiable homicide, but said the facts of the case made it “appropriate” for the federal system.
Dayton police said Leo Montgomery III, 21, died of gunshot wounds and Evon Walker was shot but survived after police say Martin fired at them on Dec. 2, 2016.
A spokeswoman for the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that Martin’s state case was terminated March 7 without being reviewed by a three-prosecutor panel.
It appears the federal prosecution even though self-defense is because he was a drug dealer or it apears so.

Dayton, OH: Second Use By This Resident

From 9/9/15 Dayton Daily News:
A Dayton woman targeted by criminals at least five times in 11 years fatally shot a man she said broke into her home Wednesday morning, the second intruder she has hit with gunfire in about two years.

The 46-year-old woman, who lives in the 200 block of Richmond Avenue, told officers the man smashed a window and entered the second floor of her Five Oaks neighborhood home. The woman’s brother said the intruder initially broke a first-floor window but could not get inside because of metal security bars installed after a burglary last month.

The same female victim, whose name police did not release, also shot and wounded a juvenile who kicked in her back door in June 2013, according to police reports and her brother, 54-year-old Efrim Goldsmith.

Dayton police said the initial evidence indicates the woman acted in self-defense.

The deceased was identified as 22-year-old DeBrandon Jurrod Dickerson, who is from Detroit, and who has only been in the Dayton area for about a week, officials said. Police said they do not believe Dickerson was acting alone.
This woman needs more ammo.  Also, another victim of bizarre naming syndrome.

Scioto County, OH

From Dec. 15, 2010 ABC channel 6:
The Scioto County Sheriff's Office says it appears a homeowner shot a man who was firing a gun into his home in self defense, ABC 6/FOX 28 News has learned.

According to Scioto County Sheriff Marty V. Donini, a 911 call from 11 Leonard Street in Scioto Furnace at 11:39 p.m. alerted police to a person outside of the home shooting through the door. Bullets were going into the house, the caller said.

Sheriff Donini stated that during this 911 call, the caller later advised that the man shooting the gun had been shot and they needed help.

Deputies and detectives, along with emergency medical services, went out to the home and found the man lying in the front yard. The Scioto County coroner pronounced the man dead upon arrival.
Sheriff Donini says the man has been identified as 25-year-old Timothy Ray Carpenter, of Burton Road in South Webster, Ohio.

"From the initial investigation and interviewing the witnesses it appears that this is a case of self defense with the home owner protecting his family," the sheriff said.

Ohio: Great-grandmother who shot robber says 'God was with me'

Columbus, Ohio

From the Columbus Dispatch of October 22, 2009
Great-grandmother who shot robber says 'God was with me'

When an armed robber barged into a North Side motel room Wednesday night and ordered the six people there to the floor, he put a 70-year-old woman closer to her handgun.

The great-grandmother knelt between the beds, reached into her purse on the floor and pulled out her .357 Magnum pistol.

She fired one shot at the robber, who staggered from the room, collapsed in the parking lot and died.

"It's a wonder she didn't shoot us all," said her 51-year-old son, who was preparing to hand over his cash when he heard the gunshot. "She's the worst shot in the world.

"She said to me, 'God was with me tonight. You know I couldn't have done that myself.'"

None of the family members, who live in Ironton, wanted to be identified, fearing retaliation; and the woman didn't want to be interviewed. They have moved to a different room in the motel.

"She's torn all to pieces," her son said. "Who would ever want to shoot someone?"

Wayne Winston, 25, died of a single gunshot wound in the chest, Franklin County Coroner Jan Gorniak said yesterday. Police listed his address as "streets of Columbus."

The woman has a permit to carry a concealed gun, her son said, and carries the gun she inherited from her late husband.

Asked to describe his mother, he said, "Religious. She's always been my hero."

The family was staying in a first-floor room at the Continent Inn, near I-71 and Rt. 161, while attending the All-American Quarter Horse Congress. The son said he was in the room with his mother, his wife, his daughter and son-in-law and a family friend.

The door was partially open so the adults could stay within earshot of two girls, ages 12 and 17, in the room next door.

The son said the door flew open shortly after 9 p.m. and they found themselves confronted by a man who pointed a black handgun at them and said, "Everybody here knows what the game is." He told them to get on the floor and began demanding money from the son and his son-in-law, who were closest to the door. The gunman seemed angry that the son-in-law had only $14.

"I was going into my pocket for money" when a shot rang out and the gunman ran from the room, the son said. "I thought I was shot. I didn't realize my mother had shot him. It was mass chaos."

He still wasn't sure what had happened when he went outside and saw the intruder's body in the parking lot. Then he heard a second shot. His mother, the gun at her side, had tensed up and "squeezed off another shot into the floor," he said.

Columbus police don't expect to file charges against the woman but said the case probably will be presented to a Franklin County grand jury as a routine procedure. The son said the officers who met with his family were "extremely supportive."

He has a horse farm and is attending the Quarter Horse Congress to watch his 21-year-old daughter compete and to support others who train at his farm.

Word of the shooting spread quickly yesterday among those attending the event, which is in its third and final week at the Ohio Expo Center.

"That's a hell of a woman," said George Wyeth, 63, of Claysville, Pa. "I don't blame her a bit. You pull a gun on someone, you ought to get shot."

"I give her a lot of credit," said Beverly Hicks, 77, of Perrysburg in northwestern Ohio, who doesn't know many people her age who carry guns. "I'd be afraid to carry a gun."

Police Sgt. Ken Tischler, a community liaison officer, said armed robberies of motel guests near the Continent are rare, but he had warned people attending the Congress about a rash of vehicle break-ins at motels in the I-71 and Rt. 161 area - 102 thefts from autos between mid-August and late September.

Springfield, Ohio

From WHIO of October 17, 2009

The other two men fled the scene. Springfield police are asking anyone with information about the incident or the two suspects to call (937) 324-7680.

Akron, Ohio Store Owner Shoots Robber

Akron, Ohio

From the October 3, 2009 Akron Beacon Journal:

A Chicago man suspected in an attempted armed robbery was shot and killed Thursday night in what Akron police are calling a confrontation with the owner of a neighborhood market at Raymond and Campbell streets.

Akron Police Lt. Rick Edwards said the store owner, Ali Ahmed, 59, had closed for the night and was walking to his vehicle in the rear parking lot at about 7:30 when the suspect approached.

There was an exchange of gunfire — witnesses reported seven or eight shots — and both men were hit, Edwards said.

Ahmed was taken by ambulance to Akron General Medical Center with wounds that were not life threatening, Edwards said.

A hospital official declined Friday to release any details about Ahmed's condition.

Edwards, the department's spokesman, identified the robbery suspect as Timothy Grant, 29, of Chicago's west side. He said Grant died at 9:04 p.m. Thursday at Akron General from unspecified gunshot wounds.

According to police radio traffic moments after the shooting, one man was shot in the head and the other in the hand.

Grant's mother, Sharon Grant, 50, said in a phone interview from her Chicago residence that her son was visiting an aunt in Barberton — his second trip there in the past year — and that she talked to him by phone about noon Thursday.

She said he asked to be wired some money for a bus ride back home and that she was preparing to do that when hospital officials called and said her son was deceased.

Ohio: Man fires at would-be robber

West Chester Township, Ohio

From Cincinatti.com of September 30, 2009
Man fires at would-be robber

A resident wrestled with a would-be burglar Wednesday, then fired a shot that may have hit the fleeing man’s pickup, officials say.

Edward Honerlaw, 55, of the 8200 block of West Chester Road, reported he was home alone around 2 p.m. when an intruder kicked in a rear door – so he armed himself with a handgun, a news release said. After a tussle, the suspect fled; Honerlaw fired at the truck.

West Chester Township police have arrested Kyle P. Lightner, 22, of Bannon Court in Middletown. He has been charged with one court of burglary, a second-degree felony.

It was unclear Wednesday evening when Lightner may appear in court.

The incident was reported around 2 p.m.

As of 3:30 p.m., officers were still on the scene gathering information, Wilson said.

Authorities described the suspect as a white man, 6 feet tall, 170 pounds, about age 35, with a scruffy beard, wearing a white hoodie sweatshirt.

He fled in a tan pickup truck, Wilson said.

Ohio: Elderly victim shoots would-be robber, 24, police say

Dayton, Ohio

From the Dayton Daily News of September 19, 2009
Elderly victim shoots would-be robber, 24, police say

A 24-year-old man who allegedly got out of his car and tried to rob an elderly man at gunpoint was shot by the would-be victim, who was licensed to carry a concealed weapon and fired to defend himself, police said.

The younger man was shot twice on Saturday, Sept. 19, and was taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where he was under guard, Dayton police Sgt. Damon Castor said. The gunshot injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, Castor said.

“Apparently he was trying to rob the older gentleman of something,” Castor said of the younger man. “He picked on the wrong person.”

The would-be victim, in his 70s, was not injured, Castor said. The confrontation took place at West Third Street and Brooklyn Avenue in west Dayton, police said.

It was not clear whether the alleged attacker was trying to steal the older man’s car or money, Castor said.

No charges had been filed Saturday. Police are investigating.

Ohio: Robbery, standoff end with 2 men dead

Fairborn, Ohio

From the Dayton Daily News of September 2, 2009
Robbery, standoff end with 2 men dead

A stolen $500 piece of silver and two dead suspects are what’s left of a bizarre home invasion that led to a four-hour police standoff.

Bradley Fugate said he had just opened the front and back doors to let some cool air into his Huffman Avenue home Monday, Aug. 31, when two men came in the back door and put guns to his head.

Less than 24 hours later, both of those men were dead, one at Fugate’s home Monday and the other after a Fairborn standoff Tuesday.

“I didn’t know who they were, and they kept asking 'Where’s the money?’ ” Fugate said. “My brother, we kept trying to talk in circles to keep them calm. The black guy, he kept laughing.”

That man, Danny L. Brown, 30, pushed Fugate’s niece down onto a bed while rummaging through a safe in the bedroom, Fugate said.

“That was enough for me and it allowed me to get my gun from where I keep it in the bed and I raised up and fired,” Fugate said. “We got into the kitchen and he turned around and raised his gun up at me. That’s when I shot him in the head. It was a fatal shot.”

Fugate said he fired two shots at the other robber, Shawn Jones, 40, who was able to get away in a cream-yellow Cadillac with a one-pound silver bar and some prescription medication.

“They got into my safe and got the silver,” Fugate said. “It was just one of the safes with a key — a K-Mart special. You use it to store important documents in case of a fire.”

Brown was found inside Fugate’s home on Huffman Avenue and pronounced dead at Miami Valley Hospital.

Hours later three women tried to pawn the silver bar, Dayton Lt. Patrick Welsh said. Detectives used the silver bar to track down Jones in Fairborn, Welsh said.

Jones at first slammed the door and held his grandmother, Edna Vickery, captive, yanking her back into the house twice when she tried to leave, Fairborn police Capt. Doc Plemmons said.

About 15 minutes later, police were able to pull the woman out of her home when she came to the door a third time. Police said she was not injured but had her grandson’s blood on her clothes.

Fairborn Chief Terry Barlow said police were never able to talk to Jones after that initial contact at the door. Negotiators urged him to come out, waited, then fired tear gas into the house, all with no response. Officers then kicked in the door and found the man dead in the living room, his wrists cut .

Welsh said police are still looking for a possible third suspect in Monday’s home invasion — a person who drove the Cadillac from the scene.

Bradley Fugate is not facing any criminal charges at this time, police said.

An Ohio law passed last year allows people to defend their homes from invaders by any means necessary, including lethal force.

“I ain’t no hero, and I’m broken up about it,” Fugate said. “I did what I had to do.”

Ohio: Man Fatally Shoots Armed Intruder, CPD Says

Columbus, Ohio

From NBC4i of July 30, 2009
Man Fatally Shoots Armed Intruder, CPD Says

A man fatally shot an armed intruder while protecting his 5-year-old relative late Wednesday, authorities said.

Columbus police continued to investigate an overnight shooting on the city’s Southwest Side.

CPD said the incident started with a home invasion but it was the suspect who was fatally shot.

CPD was called to a home on the 1500 block of Autumn Village Drive on reports of a shooting at about 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Officers found a man on a front porch with a gunshot wound to his neck.

The armed suspect broke into home shortly before he was fatally shot, CPD said.

“There was a knock on the door. The resident went to the door, at which time the victim out front entered the house with a firearm in commission of an aggravated robbery,” said CPD homicide Sgt. Dana Norman.

As the armed suspect entered the home, a man picked up his 5-year-old relative to protect child as well as a firearm and fired shots, according to authorities.

The suspect attempted to flee the home after being wounded but collapsed on the porch. He died a short time later.

Detectives have not released the identity of the suspect currently, but NBC4 was told the shooter and suspect did not know each other.

The police report listed the suspect as an unknown black male in his 20s.

The man who fatally shot the suspect was not a resident of the home; he was staying there with relatives. There were four people in home at time of the invasion: a woman, child and two men, one of whom is bedridden.

Authorities have have not released additional information on the shooter’s identity, either.

“It’s a very quiet neighborhood,” said neighbor Gary Dulaney.

No other injuries were reported from the incident.

“Five-years-old, man. You’re always concerned about the kid. I mean you hope you don’t bring your child into that situation. It is scary. I feel bad for him,” Dulaney said.

No charges were filed against the man who shot the intruder currently, but the case will be presented to the Franklin County grand jury for review.

Anyone with additional information on the city’s 49th homicide of 2009 was asked to call the CPD homicide squad at 614-645-4730.

Ohio: Owner of store shoots robber

Barberton, Ohio

From the Akron Beacon-Journal of July 11, 2009
Owner of store shoots robber

A Barberton store owner opened fire on two robbers Thursday night, and police believe one of them was a man whose body was later discovered outside Akron General Medical Center.

The body has yet to be identified. His accomplice has also not been identified.

Barberton Police Chief Michael Kallai said the robbery occurred at 9:30 p.m. Thursday at the 619 Brew Thru at Fifth Street Southeast and Snyder Avenue.

One of the men robbed a clerk and then, after being shot, fled with an undisclosed amount of money in a red Nissan Maxima sedan.

Police said store owner Morad A. Fares fired at the robbers. Fares, 22, declined comment Friday afternoon.

Kallai said the case remains under investigation. He said a prosecutor would ultimately decide whether Fares acted in self-defense.

Fares has told police that at least one of the robbers was armed.

Ohio law generally allows shop owners and homeowners to protect themselves when their lives are threatened.

Earlier this year, a West Akron pizza shop owner was exonerated of criminal charges by Summit County prosecutors, who ruled he acted in self-defense when he shot and killed an armed robber.

''I'm not going to say. That's up to the prosecutor,'' Kallai said of Fares. ''We're still waiting to get all the facts. We have to ID the deceased and the vehicle's driver before we make any decision.''

At about 10 p.m. Thursday, a man with bullet wounds was dumped outside Akron General. He later died.

The body remains at the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office as authorities try to identify him.

Police say the shooting victim was a light-skinned black male, standing 6-foot-2 and weighing about 200 pounds. He had a goatee and a discolored front tooth. He wore white jogging pants, a blue ''BOSS'' labeled T-shirt, a green hooded sweat shirt and a blue baseball cap.

The driver of the vehicle is described only as a white male in his 40s.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to contact Barberton police detectives at 330-745-2181.

Ohio: Man Shoots Pit Bull Attacking Teen

Columbus, Ohio

From WBNS of June 19, 2009
Man Shoots Pit Bull Attacking Teen

A man shot a pit bull in the leg Thursday evening to stop the dog from attacking a teenager.

Police said the dog tore part of the 15-year-old boy's ear and bit his arm and leg, 10TV's Kevin Landers reported.

According to police, the attack was the culmination of an argument among neighbors on Diane Place on the south side. The argument escalated into a fight involving the boy and others on the street.

A witness told detectives they heard the owner of the dog say "sic 'em" before releasing the animal to attack the boy.

"During the fight, the male released the dog and it bit one of the people they were fighting," Sgt. Thomas Nance told 10TV News. "Another man approached and shot the dog as it was attacking the 15-year-old."

The boy was taken to Nationwide Children's Hospital. His condition was not known Thursday night.

Police were still investigating the cause of the argument.

The dog was taken into custody by animal control officers.

Lima, Ohio Burglar Shot

Lima, Ohio

From the May 8, 2009 LimaOhio.com:

LIMA - A wannabe burglar may be walking around with a lead reminder of a Friday break-in.

Lima Police believe the man who reportedly broke into a home in the 800 block of West Wayne Street early Friday morning may have been shot by the home's owner.

The incident occurred just before 4 a.m. Friday, according to Lima Police Detective Kent Miller. The home's owner was sitting in his living room, just about an hour after coming home from working third shift, when he heard a bang from the next room. He walked in and saw a man in his house by the front door. The homeowner turned around and grabbed his .22 revolver and yelled at the intruder, who then rushed at him, Miller said. He fired one shot before the would-be burglar fled.

Police believe the bullet may have struck the intruder, but found no blood or other evidence of injury at the scene.

"We think he hit him mainly because of the distance between them. He was just three or four feet away, but we didn't find any blood," Miller said.

Police have notified hospitals around the region to keep an eye out for a man seeking treatment for a gunshot wound. Miller said he believes if the man is wounded he may try to treat himself or ask friends for help.

Columbus Gas Station Robber Shot

Columbus, Ohio

From May 5, 2009 WBNS channel 10, Columbus:
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Police said a man was shot when he tried to rob a northeast side gas station on Tuesday morning.

The armed robber entered the BP gas station, located at 1959 17th Ave., shortly after midnight, 10TV's Tino Ramos reported.

The man confronted the clerk, who had a gun behind the counter. The clerk shot the robber and he collapsed outside.
