Convenience store clerk wounds suspect in holdup

A clerk at a northwest Houston convenience store shot a suspected robber during a holdup outside the store, police said.

Houston police said two armed males confronted Tuan Minh Coa Tran, 23, about 7:45 p.m. Saturday as he was backing out of the driveway at the Wheatley Food Store, 8512 Wheatley.

One of the suspects shot out the front passenger window of the victim's car. Tran grabbed his own weapon and returned fire, hitting one of the suspects in the head.

The suspect was listed in critical condition at Ben Taub General Hospital, police said. His name was not released.

The other suspect, Cleveland Evans, 19, was taken into custody. He was charged with armed robbery and was being held Sunday on $30,000 bond.
