DARIEN — A homeowner shot at three people attempting to break into his home on Five Mile River Road on Thursday morning, according to police.

As the masked trio began to break in through the front door of the home, the homeowner saw that at least one of the suspects had a firearm, Darien Detective Sgt. Mauricio Vigil said in a statement Thursday afternoon. 

Vigil said the suspects fled after the firearm was discharged, and a juvenile potentially matching the description of one of the suspects arrived at the Bridgeport Hospital suffering from a gunshot wound. The juvenile was rushed into surgery and his condition is stable as of 2:15 p.m. 

I am hoping this kid learns from this. 

Manchester, KY

A 14-year-old Kentucky boy shot and killed two men attempting to steal firearms from a safe within a home early Sunday morning, police said.

Clay County 911 received a call at approximately 4:24 a.m. regarding a shooting incident in Manchester. Upon responding, Manchester Police found two individuals had been shot and requested assistance from Kentucky State Police, according to a news release from KSP.

Investigators found that the teen, who is a resident of the home, discovered the two men inside and saw them holding firearms, KSP said.

"The juvenile, acting in self-defense, retrieved a handgun and shot both men before escaping through a bedroom window," according to KSP.

North Redington Beach, FL

A burglary suspect was sent running for his life when a 76-year-old Florida homeowner heard his wife’s screams and began shooting, according to investigators. The intruder was wounded but survived to be arrested in the street by deputies, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office reported in a news release. The homeowner was not hurt, but his wife suffered non-life threatening injuries in the attack, officials said....

Deputies were summoned to the residential neighborhood by reports of a man standing in the road and “yelling.” “While deputies were responding to the initial call, a second 911 call was received at 3:23 a.m. at 208 Bath Club Boulevard North, reporting a residential burglary,” the sheriff’s office said. “Upon arrival, deputies located (a man) in the roadway on Bath Club Boulevard with a single gunshot wound.” The wounded 51-year-old man also proved to be their burglary suspect, officials said. He is accused of gaining entry in a home by smashing out a front window with a rock, detectives say. “Once inside the residence, (he) encountered (a 74-year-old woman) and began to struggle with her physically,” the sheriff’s office said. “(Her husband) heard her scream his name in distress and saw her struggling with (a man). Fearing for his and his wife’s safety, (he) retrieved his firearm and shot (the man) once in the right shoulder.”

Boise, ID

11/16/23 CBS channel 2:

BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — According to a recent news release, Boise Police responded to a prowler call for service just after 2:30 a.m. at a home on the 6000 block of W. Cassia St.

Upon arrival, officers learned the suspect, 22-year-old Khynndyl Lasley from Boise, was barricaded in the furnace room and being held at gunpoint by the resident.

Home surveillance video indicates Lasley walked up to the house, checked the door handle, opened the door and attempted to steal items from the home. Lasley was confronted by the homeowner at gunpoint. The homeowner gave commands to Lasley to leave, but he refused, closed the door and barricaded himself until officers arrived.

Officers set up containment and called out several commands for Lasley to surrender, but he would not comply and remained barricaded in the room. Officers successfully executed a plan just before 3:30 a.m., safely opening the door and revealing the suspect. Officers used a 40 mm non-lethal round and deployed a K9 on Lasley before he was taken into custody.

Yuma Co., AZ

 1/3/19 Fox News:

One person is dead and three others are injured after they were shot by a resident of an Arizona home they were trying to burglarize. According to a news release, when Edith Guerrero, Jaden James, Leonardo Gonzalez and Jessica Aynes broke into the home they woke the sleeping occupants as they entered. The unidentified occupant with the gun fired several rounds, hitting all four suspects and ultimately killing one.

Nashville, TN

7/1/20 WTVF:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Police say they are classifying a deadly Nashville shooting as justifiable homicide after a man shot and killed a burglar in his home.

The call came in around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday at a home on Radnor Street, located just off of Nolensville Pike. The shooting happened at the back side of the home.

Metro Nashville police say a 72-year-old Henry Schuster came home after eating breakfast to find a kitchen window screen lying on the floor along with several other items. According to investigators, he drew a pistol and began searching each room of the home.

Police say he encountered 27-year-old Taylor Lowery in a bathroom. Schuster told police he shot Lowery when he lunged at him and tried to grab for the gun. Neighbors like Adam Troy had no idea the shooting even happened....

Schuster ran outside and called 911. Lowery was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died.

Cobb County, GA

3/23/20 Fox 5 Atlanta:

MARIETTA, Ga. - Police are investigating after a Cobb County resident stopped three burglars in their tracks, killing one of them.
According to investigators, late Sunday night at least three people tried to break into a home on Olive Spring Road. officers say a 17-year-old resident opened fire on the intruders.

Oneida Co., NY

5/30/19 Fox News:

The Oneida County District Attorney is investigating a 64-year-old homeowner in New York who it says shot and killed two people, thought to be burglars, with an unregistered gun on Tuesday.

Ronald A. Stolarczyk was arrested and charged with felony possession of an illegal handgun. Authorities say he shot Patricia Anne Talerico, 57, and Nicholas A. Talerico, 27, in the garage of his home, according to New York State Police.

Stoalrczyk told DA Scott McNamara that the gun was his father’s, and that he'd forgotten to register it. If it is determined that the gun was loaded and in the home with the homeowner present, the charge could be reduced to a lower-level felony.

The DA and police authorities continue to investigate the scene and surrounding houses, looking for any surveillance footage of the encounter.

In addition, law enforcement hopes to determine the motive of the two who were shot; the homeowner did not indicate that he knew them.

New York State Police told CNY Central News that it found stolen items "belonging to Stolarczyk in Nicholas Talerico’s residence along with other possible stolen items," indicating this may not have been the first time the pair had been at the home.

No charges for the use of deadly force; just the unregistered gun.

Middletown, OH

Because so many U.S. mass murders involve axes or hatchets, this news story caused great wonder.  7/6/18 Fox News Channel 19:

Middletown police were called to the 1300 block of Woodlawn Avenue on a report of a burglary early Friday morning.

Kaylie Stacy found Michael Robert McClain, 39, "with his pants down, holding his penis with his right hand and had a hatchet, deadly weapon, in his left hand," the police report states.

"I came in, and my bedroom light was on, which is never left on we always turn it off," she said.
Stacy asked her husband Tim to help get McClain out of the residence. He was armed with a gun when he tried to wake up McClain, police said.

Yes, if you find a man without pants and a weapon in one hand, a handgun is recommended.  From the mugshot and news report, a shave and shower (and an antipsychotic medicine) are in order.

Houston, TX

8/26/17 Houston Chronicle:

An alleged intruder was shot dead by a home resident in Houston's Greater East End early Saturday.

Authorities received a call about the incident around 3 a.m., according to the Houston Police Department's homicide division.

A person reportedly attempting to enter a home in the 6900 block of Avenue T was shot and killed by someone inside.

Swartz, LA

SWARTZ, La - The Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office is investigating, after a burglary suspect was shot and killed by a homeowner in Swartz.

Deputies were called to a home  on Highway 594 Sunday afternoon on a report of a burglary attempt.

The suspect, Jessie Allin 32, allegedly broke into the home and threatened to hurt two elderly people who were inside.

“We were asleep, and I thought I had heard something but I wasn’t for sure,” Lee remembered. “I thought I was just dreaming something, and then I heard a big bang again.”

She knew something was not right.

“I got up and came running through the hallway and my gun was sitting on the dog cage, and the guy was standing in the kitchen. He had just busted my door open,” Lee said.

Lee then grabbed her .45-caliber handgun and her shotgun.

“I put the gun in his face and asked him if there was something I could do for him, and he was gone just that quick,” Lee said. “I chased him out the back door trying to look at the tag number on the car, something I could describe other than just him.”

Within an hour, Madison County deputies arrested Quentin Childress, 20, of Jackson, Jaylon Chiles, 18, of Biloxi, Miss., Amar Johnson, 21, of Jackson, Kendrick McMullin, 19, of Jackson, and a juvenile male. Each is charged with aggravated burglary.

TAMPA, Fla., April 13, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The Rickman Law Firm announces today that a not guilty verdict was delivered by a jury in the second degree murder trial of Ruben Rodriguez, a veteran of the U.S. Army who served two tours in Iraq. Rodriguez was charged with murder after he fatally shot an individual with his AR-15 rifle. The jury delivered their verdict after just two and a half hours of deliberation. Attorney Anthony Rickman of The Rickman Law Firm defended Rodriguez at trial. David Knox served as co-counsel.

In January 2015, Rodriguez arrived at his home to observe two men fleeing his yard. Upon seeing the men, Rodriguez armed himself with an AR-15 rifle and traveled in their direction. A few minutes later, Rodriguez came into contact with the men and asked if they had seen anyone running from his home. One of the men approached the vehicle, cursing and threatening Rodriguez. After repeated requests from Rodriguez not to approach the vehicle and advising the individual that he had a weapon, the man arrived at Rodriguez's window and continued to threaten him.

While close enough to see the AR-15 rifle on Rodriguez's lap, the individual taunted Rodriguez. He then reached into the vehicle and grabbed the muzzle of the firearm attempting to pull it away from Rodriguez. He placed the muzzle of the firearm in his mouth and told Rodriguez to shoot him, yelling, "I'm not afraid to die….are you?" As he had the muzzle of the rifle near his mouth, the individual threw a punch at Rodriguez's head. Rodriguez fired a single shot, killing him instantly. Toxicology results showed that the individual had 10 times the normal dosage of methamphetamine in his system and a blood alcohol level two times the legal limit. The deceased was also found in possession of a 3.5-inch pocket knife.

ST. FRANCIS — Farmer Blake Feikert is in fear for his life and for others close to him because the man he admitted to shooting while burglarizing him a second time is walking free.

“We need to have some justice. If they do it once, they’ll be back to do it again,” said Feikert, 39. “I think everybody needs to be able to protect their property.”

The man he shot is recovering from injuries and is home from the hospital, Feikert said, but has yet to be publicly identified or charged after being found 25 days ago in Feikert’s farm shop with a wound from a .45 caliber handgun.

“They tell me it’s under investigation and they cannot release information, but yet, he’s out running around free, bragging to everybody about how he got by with it,” Feikert said.

Based on the man’s profession, which takes him to various personal properties, Feikert said “I believe he is scoping out your house to rob you.”...

Some two weeks after the shooting, Cheyenne County Sheriff Cody Beeson and County Attorney Nicole Romine concluded in a press release that Feikert acted reasonably in defense of himself and his property.

Kingwood, TX

12/25/16 KHOU:

KINGWOOD, Texas -- A burglary suspect was shot and killed in a Kingwood home on Christmas Eve.

According to police, the incident happened around 9:45 p.m. Saturday on Longleaf Pines Lane when a resident noticed broken glass in a front window of his home. 

Police said as he was checking out the glass, the homeowner noticed a suspect in his home. He then alerted his son who was also in the house with his wife. 

The son, who carries a weapon, shot the suspect. He died in the home. 

Miami, FL

12/13/16 Miami Herald:

An attempted home break-in went awry for the would-be-burglar Tuesday when a homeowner cornered him in the backyard, and shot him, police said.

Miami police hadn’t released the name of the suspected burglar by late morning. They said he was transported to the hospital and was undergoing surgery with a bullet wound to the left side of his mid-section....

According to Miami police, the couple in the home on Northeast 42nd Street were awakened when the home’s alarm went off while someone was trying to break in through a rear window.

The homeowner went downstairs with a gun and spotted a man before he was able to gain entry. Then, police said, there was a confrontation in the backyard, where the man was shot. Police said they found bolt cutters in the yard not far from the shooting victim.
“He was heard trying to break in through a window,” said Miami police spokeswoman Yelitza Cedano-Hernandez. “The homeowner was inside the house. Came outside and shot him.”

Sunrise, FL

11/29/16 Miami Herald:

On Monday morning, three men broke into a Sunrise home at 4380 NW 103rd St. and were greeted by another resident with a gun. Before they were able to ransack the place, the resident, Warren Darlow, fired.

One man, Albert Jones, was shot dead, according to Sunrise police. The two others, Curtis Jefferies, and Jose Coleman, took off, but were soon arrested and charged with burglary and murder.

Neighbors of the North Miami-Dade family told Miami Herald news partner CBS4 that in previous incidents someone had thrown a rock through a window of the house and tried to break in the back door.

Just as Elaine Stiehl, 78, was about to take her nap, she heard a noise coming from the front of her home, Coweta County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Col. James Yarbrough told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Stiehl grabbed her pistol, loaded it and stepped into the hallway to find two men, who allegedly broke into her home, police said.

Yarbrough said the men, Thomas Allen Linder and John Michael O’Neal, saw the gun, ran out of the home and got into an SUV driven by Anne Renee Dearman. The trio sped off, but police later found them heading north on I-85, Yarbrough said. Two guns, one stolen from out of state, power tools and fur coats were found in the car.

Mission, TX

MISSION – A Mission man is recovering in the hospital after breaking into a home and being shot by the homeowner.

It happened before noon on Tuesday at a home on Sauz Street.
Mission Police Lt. Jody Tittle said a 71-year-old disabled veteran heard someone open his door. He grabbed his gun and saw a burglar in his laundry room.

He warned the suspect not to move, but the man moved and the homeowner shot him. Then, the suspect ran off.

Boynton Beach, FL

6/30/16 CBS 12 West Palm Beach:

BOYNTON BEACH (CBS12) — A Boynton Beach grandmother was home alone when three burglars entered her house.
But what she did next may surprise you.
"It was really scary. It was a very, very scary situation. 'Cause I had no idea what they were gonna do," said the woman, whom we agreed not to identify.
About 12:45 Tuesday afternoon she went to the peephole and saw a man was at her front door, banging on the door, ringing the bell.
He left but came back a few minutes later, with a T-shirt over his head, and putting on gloves, so she ran to the bedroom to get a handgun from the dresser beside her bed.
"I heard something, glass breaking and then I was freaking out," she recalled.
Three menthree burglars---- were in her living room, and she was in the bedroom standing just inside the doorway ready to shoot them if they entered.
"I decided that it's either them or me, you know. I had to save my life. One of them came to the door here and opened it and when he did I had the gun in his face," she said.
