Documenting civilians using guns in self-defense. Largely because a well-known gun control activist insisted to me that defensive use of guns by civilians was very rare: "maybe once in ten years."

NAMPA, Idaho (CBS2) — A Nampa man has been cleared of any charges as the prosecutors determine he acted in self-defense.
Ryan Fleming shot and killed Kevin Villalobos on September 29, 2024, after Villalobos showed up at his home intoxicated and uninvited and began attacking Fleming. The Canyon County Prosecutor's Office reports that the evidence in this case shows that Mr. Villalobos aggressively approached the entrance of Mr. Fleming's home and began physically attacking him. Mr. Fleming "exercised his legal right to self-defense and used necessary force to protect himself and his home."
Canyon County Prosecuting Attorney Christopher Boyd issued the following statement: "This was an unfortunate and tragic event that resulted in the loss of a life, and I extend my sympathies to the family of Mr. Villalobos as they grieve. However, under Idaho law, individuals have an unequivocal right to defend themselves, their families, and their homes from violent attacks. Idaho’s self-defense and ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws are clear: when an individual is faced with an immediate and unlawful threat of serious bodily harm, they are legally justified in using force to protect themselves."
Comments attempt to blame Fleming with assertion that Fleming attacked Villalobos wife and child the previous day. Even if true, the correct response to a crime not involving imminent harm is to call police.

CHANNELVIEW, Texas (KTRK) -- Two armed men were shot and killed by a 17-year-old while they attempted a home invasion, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.
On Friday at about 10:40 p.m., deputies with the Harris County Sheriff's Office responded to an in-progress shooting call in the 16000 block of 1st Street.
ABC13 obtained surveillance footage showing four suspects arriving and parking next door to the home.
Nearly two minutes later, two suspects are seen running back to the car before driving off.
Upon arrival, deputies said they located two men with apparent gunshot wounds on the lawn along the side of a residence.
The two other suspects were found on the lawn along the house and were pronounced dead, according to Gonzalez.
A woman, a 12-year-old boy, and two 17-year-old men were inside the home during the attempted home invasion but were not injured, Gonzalez said.
Deputies said one of the 17-year-olds retrieved a shotgun and discharged it several times, striking the two intruders.
8/23/22 Lexington County Chronicle:
The shooting death of a home invader in Lexington has been ruled a justifiable homicide.
Lexington Police relayed the decision from the 11th Circuit Solicitor’s Office about an Aug. 16 incident, during which a man and his brother-in-law, 33-year-old Matthew Stanfield of Colorado, exchanged gunfire.
The release notes that “it was found that the male victim acted in self-defense ... during a home invasion and violent assault.”
Stanfield had made previous threats against his sister, wife to the male victim, and their children, the release states.
“This incident began minutes after the male victim had left for work when he was notified with an alert on his mobile phone that someone was on his property,” the release recounts. “Viewing the security camera on his mobile phone, he saw that Matthew Stanfield was outside of his home and immediately called dispatch to report an unwanted guest.
“When the male victim arrived home, he heard glass breaking from the door on the side of the house and advised the dispatcher of the home invasion in progress. The male victim entered his home and confronted Matthew Stanfield as he was trying to break into the bathroom where the female victim was hiding by striking the door repeatedly with a metal bat. Matthew Stanfield and the male victim fought for several minutes and then Matthew Stanfield went outside reaching into a large backpack that he had brought with him.
“The male victim, believing that Matthew Stanfield was arming himself with a firearm, went to get his handgun. Matthew Stanfield took a rifle from the backpack and began shooting at the male victim as he ran into the bedroom where he was able to get his handgun. The two exchanged gunfire resulting in Matthew Stanfield’s death and the male victim being shot in the arm and shoulder with non-life-threatening injuries.”
The Escambia County Sheriff's Office released video of a Florida homeowner firing a rifle at home intruders as deputies try to identify the fourth suspect.
Three of the suspects approached the victim's home while a fourth waited in a car. When the victim unlocked the front door, two of the men allegedly pushed their way inside and started attacking him, while the third waited outside with a handgun.
The victim was armed but lost his gun during the scuffle, then ran to the back of his house and grabbed an AK-47-style rifle, which he started firing at the intruders, Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons said.
A Phoenix, Arizona homeowner shot and killed two men who were attempting to break into the home Saturday morning, police said, according to reports.
When police arrived before 8 a.m. in response to several 911 calls, officers found the two alleged intruders on the ground in front of the home.
"Witnesses told the officers the shooter was inside the home next to where the men were lying," Sgt. Philip Krynsky told FOX 10 Phoenix.
"The officers were able to successfully carry the men to await paramedics. The officers were able to communicate with the three occupants of the home and they were detained peacefully."...
Krynsky explained that the people detained in connection to the shooting gave consistent stories of self-defense during the investigation into the incident.
Officers said the woman woke up to find Justin William Wright, 26, in her bedroom before he attacked her. Police said he lived on the same road as the victim.
“She was able to reach out and call 911 during this attack, but the attack persisted,” CPD Chief Daniel Slaughter said. “At which time, she was able to retrieve a gun that she had lawfully.”
The victim managed to get a gun and fatally shot him in self-defense, according to police. Slaughter said the woman had injuries that were consistent with a self-defense situation.
Gregory Gregory Miedema, 33, was a wanted sex offender accused of shooting a deputy multiple times, law enforcement officials said.
Authorities said Miedema shot a Florida deputy, then forced his way into a house and traded gunshots with the resident. The homeowner suffered a gunshot wound to his shoulder, while Miedema was fatally shot.
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A homeowner fired gunshots at a group of burglars breaking into his home, injuring at least one who was identified when he left a car, registered in his family’s name, in front of the crime scene.
The shooting happened Monday, Feb. 7, in a gated community near Cimarron Road and Oakey Boulevard.
The homeowner told police he was in an upstairs bedroom around 7:30 p.m. when his dogs started to growl, an arrest report obtained by the 8 News Now I-Team said. The homeowner then looked at home security cameras on his phone, seeing four people wearing hoods and masks attempting to break-in.
The man then went into his closet, got dressed and grabbed his gun.
As the burglars gained access to the house, the homeowner walked into a balcony area, which opens to the floor below, shooting at three of the suspects five times, the report said.
One round hit one of the suspects. All four suspects then ran from the home, police said.
During their investigation, Metro police noted an unregistered Audi sitting in front of the victim’s home. The VIN number came back to a woman out of Texas with the last name Freeman.
About an hour after the shooting, a man, later identified as Leroy Freeman, 28, arrived at Spring Valley Hospital with a gunshot wound, police said.
COLORADO SPRINGS — Colorado Springs officers are investigating after a home invasion turned into a shooting Thursday night.
Around 10:30 Thursday night, Sand Creek police officers were dispatched to 300 Gahart Drive when three suspects invaded a home. According to CSPD, shots were fired before officers arrived.
When officers reached the scene, they found a blood trail leading away from the home that ended a block away.
Testimony lasted the entire day and when it was over, the six-person coroner’s inquest jury ruled it was “justifiable homicide” which backs the shooter’s self-defense claim.
Surveillance video played in court showed the suspect was in King’s home about an hour before the shooting. The video is from inside King’s living room, and you can see and hear both men being friendly with one another. The prosecutor said the suspect brought King a marijuana joint so he could calm down from a dispute with another neighbor. You could hear King tell the soon-to-be shooter, “Love you, brother!”
About an hour later, another video from outside shows King in pajama pants and no shirt going to the shooter’s trailer where he allegedly pushed through the door, threw his neighbor’s TV inside the trailer, and grabbed another. There’s no video inside, but another outside angle shows a disturbance on the porch and then King is shot dead.
The suspect told police he not only shot in self-defense but also shot King’s leg first, which he claimed only made King angrier.
Court evidence today offered no answers about what the final argument was about, with sometimes bizarre testimony about what neighbors heard as their last words. One witness testified he heard King yell “No more internet for you!” before he was shot. Others said they heard King yell “I thought we were friends,” and then the shooter answer, “We were,” before firing three shots.
Both men were intoxicated. A deputy coroner testified that a toxicology screen on King found THC, amphetamine, and methamphetamine. A sheriff’s investigator said the suspect’s screen found THC and alcohol.
Other homicides deemed justified by investigators include Antraz Burkett.
Deputies say he attacked a woman with a hammer, hitting her in the face and head several times. Then, the woman's husband shot and killed Burkett.
Investigators say 31-year-old Anthony Burke busted a window and kicked in the front door of his ex-girlfriend's home. A man inside that home shot and killed Burke.
ANDERSON, Ind. — An Anderson woman shot and killed a man suspected of breaking into her home overnight.
911 dispatchers received a call from a female homeowner in the 1300 block of E. 8th Street around 12:47 a.m. The woman told police there was a break-in at the home, and she shot the suspected burglar.
By the time police arrived, they found the alleged suspect dead in an upstairs bedroom.
With home surveillance cameras rolling, prosecutors insist a man forced his way into the woman’s home.
“Neighbors had videos of him parking in front of the residence and looking through windows, ultimately breaking through the door and pulling a weapon out,” said Madison County Prosecutor Rodney Cummings.
Prosecutor Cummings says the suspect could also be heard on video asking for money and pretending to be law enforcement.
“There was audio, and you could hear what he was saying inside. He said, ‘It’s the police.’ He was claiming to be police officer, but he had a mask on,” said Cummings.
PHOENIX – Police in Mesa said Thursday a woman shot a man who broke into her home and then came at her with a knife.
The man was wounded in the chest Sept. 18 but the injuries weren’t life-threatening. Elijah Jones, 29, was arrested on charges of first-degree burglary and aggravated assault, police said in an email.
Jones told officers he was high on methamphetamine and didn’t recall threatening the woman. Two warrants were out for his arrest.

GOLDSBORO, N.C. (WTVD) -- Goldsboro police are investigating after a 12-year-old shot at two intruders who forced their way into an apartment and shot a woman overnight.

The [73-year-old woman] was in the kitchen, I don't know why they shot her," said the son of the woman, Randolph Bunn. He also happens to be the great-uncle of the child who fired the gun.
